مرورگر وب جدید 'گوگل کروم' از شاخص های امنیتی مهمی برخوردار است که باعث می شود گوگل از این نظر آنرا با مرورگر اپل سفری، موزیلا فایرفاکس و نسخه جدید اینترنت اکسپلورر مقایسه کند.مرورگر کروم از چهارچوب مشابه دیگر مرورگر ها بهره برده است. بویژه در استفاده از تکنیک تهیه لیست سیاه از سایت های مخرب و روش گشت وب سایت ها در پشت لایه های امنیتی از جمله درون "جعبه شنی" و مرور ناشناس اینترنت. گوگل با ارائه گوگل کروم وارد بازار مرورگرهای وب شده است که هنوز انحصار آن در دست مایکروسافت اینترنت اکسپلورر می باشد. اما آیا این تفاوت های امنیتی کروم باعث می شود این مرورگر در جلوه کاربران متمایز ظاهر شود؟ گوگل کروم از قابلیتی معرفی شده در Internet Explorer 8 بهره می برد با نام مرور نا شناس (Incognito) که اجازه میدهد کاربر در این وضعیت با مرور وب سایت ها هیچ رد پایی از خود بر جای نگذارد حتی فایل های کوکی فقط تا هنگام باز بودن پنجره جست و جو در سیستم زنده خواهند بود.
همچنین در لایه بعدی امنیتی گوگل تصمیم گرفته است که از ترجمه صفحات در جعبه شنی (sand box rendering) استفاده کند. این جعبه شنی در واقع به مفهوم ساده به معنی آن است که هنگامیکه یک مهاجم سعی می کند به درون مرورگر نفوذ کند و بتواند از طریق آن به فایل های سیستمی و ریجستری دسترسی پیدا کند، مرورگر در وضعیت جعبه شنی کار را برای مهاجم سخت تر می کند زیرا وی میبایست اکنون راهی نیز برای دور زدن جعبه شنی فراهم کند. به این طریق که جهبه شنی از ترجمه و تغییر فایل ها توسط موتور نمایش دهنده صفحات وب جلوگیری می کند و از دخالت بیرونی در ریجستری، فایل های سیستمی و هر خواندن و نوشتن دیگری از روی فایل های مهم ممانعت می کند.
اجرای هر Tab در مرورگر Chrome باعث خواهد شد که هر اپلیکیشن وب در پنجره جعبه شنی مخصوص به خود باز شود و در لایه امنیتی از دخالت مرورگر در فایل های حساس سیستم جلوگیری می شود. حتی فایل های اضافه شونده (Plug-ins) نیز در محیط دیگر حافظه Sand Box بصورت امن اجرا می شوند.
اما هنوز با وجود رقابت مرورگر ها برای تامین محیطی امن تر برای کاربران، گوگل کروم شاید نتواند با وجود ارائه نسخه آزمایشی Internet Explorer 8.0، نسخه 3 فایرفاکس و اپل سفری محلی جدا برای ارائه خود پیدا کند.
در بخش مثبت نگری، گوگل کروم کاملاً کد باز (open source) ارائه شده است تا هر متخصص امنیت و کارشناس برنامه نویس بتواند در بهبود برنامه نویسی این مرورگر خود را سهیم کند. بنابراین تجهیز امنیتی گوگل کروم با سرمایه مناسب گوگل و توسعه گری کدباز در دسترس می باشد. اما آیا مرورگر فایرفاکس این برتری را در گذشته به کاربران معرفی نکرد؟
گوگل ادعا کرده است که مرورگر جدیدش بسیار سریعتر و قابل‌اطمینان تر از هر مرورگر دیگر تا به امروز است. نکته جالبی که در مورد این مرورگر وجود دارد این است که هر برگه (tab) پردازش جدای از دیگری دارد و در صورت کرش کردن یک صفحه، بقیه صفحات جدا گانه بارگذاری می‌شوند و کل مرورگر هنگ نمی‌کند. همچنین این مروگر تحت موتور جاوا اسکریپت V8 اجرا می‌شود.
